General Music and Chorus

General Music is a weekly class for all students in grades transition through fifth. Students are exposed to a variety of musical concepts and styles. Basic elements of music are taught including singing, rhythm, melody, reading music, playing classroom instruments, and movement. Lower school students participate in at least one performance opportunity each year. Elementary Chorus, which is open to any student in grades 2-5, is offered as a volunteer activity after school once a week.

Middle and upper school students can take chorus as an elective. Chorus focuses on vocal production, ear training, music history and theory, music interpretation, sight singing, and performance skills. In addition to school and community performances, older students perform at local and state events. Several students attend state and regional festivals annually. Each year qualified students may audition for the North Carolina State Honors Chorus and All-State Chorus. Students may also apply for Governor's School in vocal music.

Several students have participated in Choral Societies. Many students have attended nationally recognized camps as well as participated in summer workshops and choral activities.

Our graduates have pursued music degrees at various universities. Students are active in college choral groups, often touring in the United States and other countries.
